Book Making for a Friend

I decided to photograph some of the process while making a custom sketchbook...
First I need to organize and cut the desired paper to be used for the inside of the book, or the guts.
After properly cutting all the paper to size I must then fold and order the paper into several signitures which are then sewn together. Followed by adhereing a piece of Tartalan to the spine of the soon to be sketchbook.
This particular sketchbook is made with three different kinds of paper, two being sketch paper and the third being graph paper.
The next step is to add a heavy weight paper for the inside cover of both the back and front of the book.
Now that the guts have been completed it is time to construct the actual cover for the sketchbook.
This is what you get after properly cutting and gluing binders board, book cloth, and decorative paper together to make the book cover. Notice that I did not at a piece of binders board for the spine. Normally I would but by not doing so it allows the sketchbook the flexibility to be opened completly flat without having that annoying bump near the spine which so often gets in the way while drawing.
Now it is time to put our guts where they belong.
If the design calls for it, any page markers must be added before securing the cover to the guts of the book.
Also before joining the cover and the inside pages I added an elastic strap to keep the book closed when it is not in use.
Notice how flat the sketchbook opens without the binders board in the spine!
Well there you have it. I hope you enjoyed this little tid bit of my work!

I've been making custom sketchbooks for about two years now and I finally decided to photograph a bit of the process.
