As the first new building of the CSU Monterey Bay campus, since its founding on the grounds of the decommissioned Fort Ord Army base in 1994, the 69,200 GSF Science Center marked a critical step forward in transforming the campus environment and establishing a new sense of community. Providing instructional space for an innovative program in Earth Systems Science and Policy, the building is organized as a reflection of the “open-door” culture that faculty sought to establish with their students. With science labs at one extreme, and classrooms at the other, faculty offices are organized along the path between. A broad range of energy and resource conservation features are incorporated into the building design and expressed as instructive opportunities.
