Kali the Battlemage

Kali is a battlemage character I worked on for the past couple weeks. She started out as a character concept in my drawings which you can see in the previous post. I've always favored mage type characters in fantasy RPGs. There is something mesmerizing about female characters who are not only beautiful, but also deadly. The project began with drawings and a concept portrait painting. I took a base mesh and began laying out the components for the character. Because I wanted to keep the geometry as clean as possible, the base meshes are grouped and modeled closest to the final form as possible. Each pieces are then sculpted and detailed in Zbrush. I used alot of edge looping and group loop to keep the lines as clean as possible.
After the sculpting was finished, I took the pieces into topogun to build an optimized model over the sculpt. Laid out the UVs, and took care of the mirror UVs in Maya. Mirroring the UVs allowed me to save tons of time on details that are basically the same on both sides, such as on the spaulders, greaves, and gauntlets. The body itself is not mirrored because I wanted to paint the face with some asymmetry.
The hair is made with polygon planes mapped with TGA with an alpha channel and normal maps to provide bump details. I also painted flow maps for the hair so it can reflect light in a more realistic manner using anisotropic secondary reflections.
Finally everything is taken into Marmoset Toolbag as an FBX file for final presentation.
