Album cover for Dunwich "Il Secondo Chiarore".
Dunwich asked me to make an illustration for their single "Il secondo chiarore". The music track was inspired by the Finnish epic poem "Kalevala". As usual for Dunwich, music is a way to open a door to a different dimension, so I tried to convey this theme into the cover, with an otherworldly setting, reminescent of a past glory. The piece was a very welcome break from the usual design work, and I had great fun while making it.
Initial sketch. Blocking out palette, shapes and general mood.
Widening the scope of the illustration, while maintaining the focus on the rightmost side, which would be the cover of the two sided digipack artwork.
More brushwork and detailing. I wanted to keep a painterly feel, with broad brushstrokes.
Final piece. I added some more mysterious ruins in a cavern. Ended up as a project for a three folds digipack.
