Project DSV (Concept)

As a dancer with 6 years break dance experience, I want to create an interface which can sync dance, music, and visual effects. Usually, dancers use their body movement to express the music they hear and Vjs controlled lighting based on the music too. This project takes the concept of using dance movement to influence music and lighting effects
The whole project will be divided into two parts. In the first part (Sound Production), I will use a Kinect sensor to capture user’s movement as an input. Use a computer to process the input to manipulate current music. The main interaction include change pitch of music by detect the height of user’s head position, change volume by detect the user’s distance from Kinect, and add extra beats by place hands in the air with specific gestures. In the second part (Light Production), I will produce a dance suit embedded by ER wires with different colors. There are five 3-way accelerometers in the suit which detect movement of a user’s hands, feet, and body. The ER wire corresponding to each body part will light up when it moves. An Arduino Lilypad will be used to process input data from accelerometers and generate output to control ER wires.
To combine the music and lighting effects, a dancer can generate music and visual effects by his dancing movement.
