THE SLEEPER by Edgar Allan Poe
(Verse 1) Effigy of Irene.

Photographic collage, 2024.

In Poe’s poem, the bereft speaker visits Irene’s mountain top grave at midnight. Moonlight drips down upon the balmy scene whilst Irene rests eternally in her tomb. Lilies and rosemary can be seen growing around her grave symbolising innocence, re-birth and remembrance.
