Romeo and Juliet Poster Designs
For this project I needed to create three different poster designs to advertise the play Romeo and Juliet. All three posters advertise the play by using the same information but in different styles. Poster one needed to use symbols. Poster two needed to use only typography. Poster three needed to be in the same style as Paula Scher, a professional graphic designer.
This is my Romeo and Juliet poster design using symbols that I created. I decided that I wanted to go a different direction than you typically see with my symbols relating to Romeo and Juliet. Instead of poison or roses I chose to portray the secrecy that is found all throughout this play. I put on lipstick and kissed a piece of paper and then manipulated it in Photoshop to remove the background. I took a picture of my daughter's hand and also manipulated it in Photoshop. I chose to turn the image greyscale to make sure the red lips were the focal point of this poster.
This is my Romeo and Juliet poster design using only typography. I chose to put some famous lines from the play into a text box that is a dagger shape, creating a symbol out of type. I chose to use hierarchy with all the different type on the page. Your eye is drawn to the area that includes the title and theatre name because of its size and color. Your eye should next see the date of the performance. Using hierarchy creates a sense of importance and makes sure that the viewer gets the most important information first.
This is my Romeo and Juliet poster design that was designed in the same style as Paula Scher's "25 years at the public" poster. I decided to recreate this specific poster specifically because of the coloring. Most of her posters are amazing with bright colors and a lot of busy text. I didn't feel like her typical style of poster design fit with the themes of Romeo and Juliet so I chose this one that is still dynamic because it has a lot of movement, but it also has the darker coloring which made it work a lot better for the theme of this play.
