In my last year at my Fine Arts college, I had to present a Thesis on Book Illustration. I chose Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved Classic,
"Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles".
"Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles".
It was an exploration using "stain-painting" to illustrate scenes from the book. I based it on Guy Ritchie's cinematic Sherlock Holmes, and combined it with comic book styles of drawing. I used India Ink on watercolour paper, and rendered it with staining substances, mainly: soy sauce, annatto seed extracts, shades of lipstick, and blue food dyes. In addition to the illustrations, I had to do a mock campaign to promote, print, and produce some of the actual products. Here are a few handpicked samples.
Below are 6 out of 36 illustrations that were made for the book.
Below are just some of the images produced for the book's mock campaign.
