This kit was a joy to work on. Set to be in Airfix's largest scale, the level of accuracy and detail had to stand up to high scrutiny from our customers. I worked in PTC Creo for several months to design this kit from original engineering drawings, multiple reference books and several visits to real Spitfire IXc's.

These projects always start with finding the basic shape either using original drawings, or if possible a 3D scan of the most original example still existing.

Once the basic shapes are accurate, I start to add a few details and begin to work out how to split the parts up for moulding. This kit has 433 parts in total.

Eventually the aircraft starts to come to life, with each part refined and detailed to make it as accurate as possible to the real thing.

Once the CAD is finished, the components get laid out by area and committed to a steel mould.
