It is quite common to see illustrators include icons from their culture and country. Like the mysterious yokai from Japan and the mythical knights from Europe. I too, wanted to include more local icons into my work. But I wanted to make sure that they remain appealing to foreign audiences too. So I started with what was closest to my heart, hawker culture, and incorporated cute animals that everyone loves!
