Flag of Crete (To Mavrolevko)

FLAG OF CRETE (To Mavrolevko)

This is my take on the flag of Crete, the largest Greek island.
The flag I have made- called To Mavrolevko (the black and white)- is modelled after the flag of the Cretan State and old flag of Greece, and combines religious, cultural and historical symbolism into one field. The black colour is inspired by the traditional dark clothing I have observed being worn by elders on the island during my holiday there in 2010. The cross of Saint George, a mainstay of Greek vexillology and evocative of the Orthodox faith, remains the main feature.
I have also added the two symbols which best represent the ancient history of Crete: The Cretan bull and a typical Labrys, representing the Bronze Age Minoan Civilisation which emerged on this very island.

The result is a flag which highlights the unique history and distinctive culture of Crete (the choice of colours) and yet shows the strong bond with the nation of Greece (the basic design). A flag which is simple and easy for anyone to draw especially children.

Before my final drawing I also experimented with a labyrinth flag attempt which didn't go well. I also attempted a flag with a white bull on a blue field, but ultimately settled on this one.

Any comments and criticisms are welcome.
