🧠 SmartCart 🛒
A new way to grocery shop
🤔 The Problem
Keeping track of groceries can be challenging and stressful, resulting in some food being forgotten about and eventually tossed. How might we reimagine the way young adults manage their groceries and reduce food waste?
🤲 Needs
1. Prevent groceries from going bad
2. Easy way to keep track of what groceries are needed
3. Reduce food waste and build positive grocery shopping habits
🕵️‍♂️ User Research
After conducting a diary study, user survey, and secondary research, we gathered a few key insights:
1. When it comes to meals, students prioritize cost and time efficiency
2. Overwhelming majority of our participants did not keep track of their groceries or spendings
3. Common grocery shopping habits include going when running out of produce or commonly used products
4. Lack of time and ability to meal plan was main reason for groceries going bad
💭 Ideation
During ideation, I decided to make a mobile app inspired by other tracker apps for various others aspects of life, such as water intake, menstrual cycles, moods, and more. Given that young adults use their phones often, a grocery tracker app would be an easy and convenient solution.

🙋‍♀️ Insights from Usability Testing
- Lo-fi prototype seemed a little redundant, it's unclear why there are two shopping lists
- Mid-fi prototype carousels were inconsistent; sideways scrolling was preferred over clicking left/right arrows
- Mid-fi prototype was unclear in terms of imagery
- It would be helpful to have the categories section expandable
- Freshness predictor should be on home page
- The home page shopping list should be expandable
