Cova do Vapor
The town of Cova do Vapor I have chosen to illustrate is located in Portugal, 12km south of Lisbon in the Almada region. This is the western coastal area facing the Atlantic Ocean: the Costa da Caparica. Since the 1960s, there has been a noticeable loss of beaches on the Costa. To make up for this shortfall, major works to supply artificial sand have been undertaken, with around 1 million cubic metres of sand extracted from the Tagus being dredged every year since 2004.
