i did the cover for the november issue of scientific american!
i was so honored to get to do this cover and inside illustration for the story “the theory that men evolved to hunt and women evolved to gather is wrong” by cara ocobock and sarah lacy. a huge thanks to a longtime favorite art director to work with michael mrak for bringing me into this project and working so hard with me to make sure everything worked and was accurate. a lot of love went into everything, and i hope that shows
i was inspired by a mixture of art deco, which is something that i am always inspired by in my own personal practice, and southern european cave paintings. the antelope in this piece for example isn’t really based on anything other than the way antelope and deer were drawn in these spaces, which of course were real creatures, but i wanted to make something that almost felt mythical and otherworldly. a hard beast to conquer, but something we are all somewhat familiar with
