BRIDGING THE GAP

The main purpose of the project, which is located in an area between modern and traditional residential areas in Ürgüp, is to create an underground circulation by placing the commercial spaces below the ground level. These commercial areas have been enriched by creating a cultural axis with the city museum at one end and the art center at the other.
The ruined structure, which was rather uninspired in its current location, was re-functionalized as an art center by partial integration. In this way, the ruin forms one end of the cultural axis by using its potential to become a landmark.

The main purpose of the city museum, which defines the other end of the cultural axis, is to make the user experience the multi-layered structure of the city of Ürgüp.  The circulation in the museum is in a hierarchy in direct proportion to the chronology of the ürgüp.
The houses are positioned above the market area, providing the visual connection of the residents with the circulation at the lower levels. The houses form terraces and form a gradually rising form. The ceiling of one residence forms the terrace of another residence above it. In this way, diversity is created in the residences and a reference is made to the traditional Ürgüp architecture.

Commercial areas are mutually defined along the cultural axis. The fact that these areas are below the ground level is a reference to the underground cities of Ürgüp. In order to make the users experience the texture of Ürgüp, the walls of places such as wineries and pottery workshops are rocks.
