25 Supersonic years of BrahMos

BRAHMOS MISSILE

BrahMos is a highly versatile and sophisticated supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia. This missile can be launched from submarines, ships, fighter aircraft, or TEL. Brahmos is one the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world. It is a co-partnership between the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, who together have formed BrahMos Aerospace.
BRAHMOS ORIGIN
The company came into force in the year 1998. Where India holds a 50.5% share of the co-partnership while Russia holds 49.5%share.Later on in 2004 various tests from various platform has done on missiles. Including land test at Pokharan at Mach 2.8. BrahMos was first test-fired on 12 June 2001 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur in a vertical launch configuration. On 14 June 2004, another test was conducted at ITR, and BrahMos was fired from a mobile launcher. Later on, various tests has been carried out. The 5 September 2010 test of BrahMos created a world record for being the first cruise missile to be tested at supersonic speeds in a steep-dive mode. The missile was test-fired from the integrated test range launching complex-3 (LC-3) at Chandipur around 11.35 am. With this launch, the Indian army’s requirement for land attacks with Block-II advanced seeker software with target-discriminating capabilities was met.
KEY FEATURE OF BRAHMOS
1. Speed: The BrahMos missile is one of the fastest cruise missiles in the world, capable of traveling at speeds of up to Mach 3 (around 3,700 kilometers per hour or 2,300 miles per hour). Its high speed makes it difficult for enemy defenses to intercept.
2. Range: The missile has a range of approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the original version, though newer extended-range variants have been developed with increased striking distance.
3. Versatility: The BrahMos missile can be launched from various platforms, including land-based systems, naval ships, submarines, and aircraft. It can engage both land and sea targets.
4. Precision: The missile is known for its high accuracy and precision strike capabilities, enabling it to hit targets with pinpoint accuracy.
5. Stealth: The missile has a low radar cross-section and advanced guidance systems, making it difficult for enemy radar to detect and track effectively.
6. Warhead: The BrahMos missile is equipped with conventional warheads. which was 200–300kg.
7. Length:- the length was about 28ft.
8. It operates on the principle of “fire and forget”.
9. It has a low radar signature.

BrahMosAerospace on 31st May 2023 commemorated 25 supersonic years of a joint venture by organizing BRAHMOS USERS MEET 2023
