Online Grocery shopping is here to stay, it has many perks including saving time and money. However, it does not save on the amount of single-use bags required for delivery.
Since groceries need to be packaged at the store before they are sent out for delivery, customers are no longer able to bring their own reusable bags.
Paper bags are also not the ideal solution. It has been shown that paper bags are more expensive and resources intensive to produce than plastic bags.
Paper bags also break easily and therefore are rarely reused. On top of that many consumers are not able to recycle their bags correctly, still causing them to end up polluting the environment.
They are also not great at keeping things cold for long trips from the store, leading to spoiled, defrosted food.
After identifying this problem we set out to help our community members to use fewer resources while still being able to enjoy all of the perks of online grocery shopping.
We also wanted to improve the overall customer experience by solving the problem of keeping groceries cold while still making it easy and rewarding be sustainable.
Our solution consisted of creating a closed-loop, deposit-return system along with a redesigned reusable bag.
1. Reusable bags will be and used for deliveries.
2. Customers will pay a small refundable deposit for each bag.
3. Bags would be returnable in-store or during the next delivery.
4. The bag is cleaned and reused.
We determined that some form of plastic material would be the most cost-effective,
durable and easy-to-clean option and identified two forms of plastic that are considered
more sustainable than traditional single-use plastics.

The option we decided to use for the bag was to use recycled plastic. According to our research, creating products from recycled plastic can help to preserve resources while also saving on energy.
