Catfish DVD Redesign

The objective of this project was to develop a highly conceptual redesign of a DVD cover and disc for an existing film or documentary.

"Catfish" is an american documentary, directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, about a man's romantic relationship with a woman that he met online.
The main concept of the girl's blank face is representative of her unknown identity and her ability to put on any mask she wants. It was photographed and rendered to look like a painting, as paintings are a motif found at both the beginning and end of the documentary. Hand-rendered type was used for the logomark because of its play on artists signatures found on paintings. There is an emphasis on the terminal of the letter "T" to appear as an abstracted hook, which is related to the idea in the movie that catfish "hook" people into online relationships.

There are also a few "digital" additions throughout the design. The bar showing the film's directors is a nod towards Facebook's tagging system, as it is a motif that is found throughout the movie.
The disc design is an illustrated pattern of a bunch of codfish surrounding a digital 8-bit style catfish. The disc pattern is inspired by the quote that puts a definition behind the term catfish.

“Catfish would keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in live. They keep you on your toes, they keep you guessing, they keep you thinking, they keep you fresh.”
