In The Medieval ages, there was an iconic symbol of Paris: Notre Dame Cathedral. While Hugo wrote the book The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the cathedral did not have the old glory. It was damaged while The French Revolution happened. At the end of the movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame(1956), cathedral had witnessed war and was damaged again. The architectural environment in the movie was like my mother. Besides being the moral center of the movie, it was also a shelter for people who needed it. From the event flow, we see the interaction between human and architecture. It was given with the sense of the gothic architecture of Notre Dame: depths and statues, rose windows and lights, life and death. In the darkness of the street, some humans seemed like statues and the whole environment was the cathedral. Cathedral witnessed all kinds of people, bad and good ones with their ugliness and prettiness. Just like having ugly gargoyles and being a significant building. It can be said that gothic architecture has a close relationship with the lives we have. There was writing on the wall of Notre Dame: faith. The cathedral was a place full of life, death, love, hate, regret, guilt, corruption, the feeling of being protected, and feeling safe. In the movie, there was a phrase like ''God save us all'': ''Notre Dame bless them.'' The relationship between humans and the cathedral in the Medieval ages has serious conflicts. As a tragic example, Quasimodo is the one who was ranging the bells, and his ears were deaf because of the bells. Also, he sheltered below the rings at the same time he beat himself with them. Although Notre Dame was a place of justice and holiness, its priest's attention was on the gold, and Esmeralda who was sheltered from injustice was killed by an arrow. Finally, there was a tragic end in which Quasimodo chose death in the arms of Esmeralda. In my opinion, this was the part that best portrayed gothic art in the movie: love and death with beauty and ugliness.
