fieldwork - an art project by Ben Morieson

fieldwork
is a project created by Ben Morieson where he has taken a vacant block and filled it with sunflowers of all sizes and types. He then invited the public to come to and explore the space.

The project can be read about in more detail HERE but essentially was to bring to people's attention the idea that empty spaces could be utilised by growing local produce for the benefit of the community.

Having read the article a few days after it was announced, I scrambled into the city the following morning, along with a friend of mine. I wanted to see this field at sunrise.

Unfortunately, i was not there early enough in this project to capture the space at the peak of its colour and liveliness. Nevertheless, the process of slowing down to talk in a dense field, being surrounded by green and gold in an otherwise bleak and concrete setting, this project was something very beautiful.
Heads bowed, facing east, the sunflowers wait in anticipation of the dawn...
Even at the other end of their life, the sunflowers maintain this beautiful intricate detail and texture

Many thanks to Ben Morieson for bringing his art to Melbourne. Please let's do this again soon.

Thanks also to Kristen for braving the early morning with me and being willing to jump in front of camera.
