DIGITAL ANGST
feat. The Green Man
This story was completed as a senior project when I was preparing my portfolio to enter the real word. The narrative makes use of an anthropomorphized form of "Paranoia" as the protagonist, (whom I've named the Greenman), with "Doubt" following close behind as an amorphous shadow. The Greenman, taking his name from the Pagan deity of renewal, also represents my self-described ascent into the world of digital art, which was very new at this point in my career. Almost no one in ca. 1997 preferred digital art over traditional since digital paintings still felt extremely cold, fake, clinical and inhuman. I was trying to find ways to make digital mediums seem more organic and expressive — like traditional art typically is. The secret, I felt, was a combination of both.

This sequence was created in equal parts traditional (water color, ink, and gouache) and digital (Photoshop, Quark Xpress, and ImageReady — DON'T LAUGH... it was 1997!

But even now, in 2020+, the narrative rings true for every new Creative ending one chapter before they're ready to move onto the next.
