Rina Sawayama Snakeskin Poster (#62)

Rina Sawayama is one of my favorite artists ever, and I’ve been loving her album SAWAYAMA, so I decided to make a poster dedicated to one of my favorite songs off the album: Snakeskin.
From what I’ve gathered from the lyrics, Snakeskin is about Rina shedding her snakeskin, by venting about so many things that have aggravated her about our current world. By writing all of the songs leading up to Snakeskin, it’s almost like a ritual, leading up to her metamorphosis, that leaves her more vulnerable than ever, but also ultimately happier than ever. Besides venting in the process of writing out these songs, the support of her fans also helps her shed her snakeskin, by listening to her music, and by buying her “pain wear.”
Rina’s skirt represents the snakeskin, and has the names of her songs on it, it represents a loose grasp of Rina herself, and the topics that she delves into, along with her pain that she’s been carrying with her.
Rina’s top has some of the many topics that she delves into during her album, which are color coded to the most relevant song. For example, Climate Change and Capitalism in XS, Casual Racism and Stereotypes in STFU, and Toxic Masculinity in Comme de Garçons (Like the Boys). Rina’s top represents herself after the metamorphosis of shedding her snakeskin, it is also inspired by the same top that was used for some photo shoots for the album, and (I believe) on the album cover itself (or at the very least, it’s similar to it.)
Rina means a lot to me, because her music has helped me get through personal issues, and become a lot more confident with who I am. I’m very happy I worked on this project, because I got to learn more about Rina, her album SAWAYAMA, and about the song Snakeskin.
