A science fiction concept of the mythological Vimana Throne. Ancient Hindu texts and Sanskrit epics describe flying chariots and palaces made of gold and silver that a special class of deities used to traverse the heaves. Hundreds of these documents have yet to be translated, some are over 7000 years old. However, the passages that have been translated describe some of the aerodynamics, propulsion, materials and metallurgy of these mythical transportation machines. According to these ancient records, there were many types of Vimana craft with different abilities, such as hovering motionless, teleportation, turning invisible and suppressing sound. The texts even contain descriptions and illustrations of mercury vortex engines, a technology being explored by modern scientists to develop ion engines.
