Vungle Relief Mural (2020)

Vungle Relief Mural (2020)
Was one of the painters part of this mural for Vungle. Project by Mural Lingo.

The relief mural installation depicts the shophouses in Telok Ayer Street, a significant historical site where Vungle’s office resides. Nestled amongst these pre-war shophouses is where Vungle’s office is located, beside old buildings of great historical interest such as Fuk Tak Chi Temple which is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore built in the 1820s by the Hakka and Cantonese communities. It was where Chinese immigrants made their first stop as soon as they arrived to offer thanksgiving for their safe passage to Singapore.

Details
Each layer was painted individually then attached together, and afterwards touch ups were done. Plenty of time and patience was required to paint the intricate details of the shophouses, with the results proving that the efforts were well worth it. The shadows created by the relief were relatively interesting and they complement the greyscale buildings at the side.

Process
The relief portion was painted and assembled individually at our studio beforehand, then brought on-site to be mounted onto the wall. After mounting, we added greyscale buildings at the side to add more emphasis to the colourful relief shophouses and complete the design in its entirety. This on-site process of mounting, painting and clean up took about a day to finish.
