Colin Cheong's profile

Waterloo Sunset (Singapore)

Singapore's Waterloo Street is a myriad of tones and textures. Located in the central business district, it is famous for its Buddhist and Hindu temples, food centres, malls and a crowd that hustles and bustles the entire day.

Indeed, Waterloo Street is a hodgepodge of activity that uniquely mixes religion, culture, commerce and leisure. The street oozes with visages from all segments of society and is one of the few streets in Singapore, while being encroached by modernity and urbanisation, that retains a strong cultural nuance in its spaces. This juxtaposition is made more poignant with the characters on the street, lending a historical gravitas to the space, mixing personal stories with the modern landscape.

The clash of history and tradition set amidst the backdrop of an urban metropolis is the premise to this documentary series and it is my aim to capture the transience of this constantly shifting cocktail of a space and depict the people, spirit and character of the area.
