COMPOSITING VISUAL EFFECTS - EMERGENT & MAKE BELIEVE

Emergent and make believe are two styles of photography techniques used to blend two or more images together

Emergent: Can one image be two things at the same time? It is the seamlessly blending of two images

Make believe: Can the impossible be made believable? Blending two images together to look like they belong with one another

EMERGENT
Emergent 01 - “Firey News”

The purpose of this first emergent is to emphasis a hot looking model with flames and fire. The juxtaposition be- tween the two images using black/white and colour creates a dynamic focus towards the center of the image. Using this greyscale effect differentiates the two images rather then them entirely blending together, creating not only a more artistic aesthetic but it creates a sharper focal point. However they still emerge into one another but this power of hierarchy has a stronger effect on the outcome of this project.
Emergent 02 - “Deforestation”

The meaning behind this image is technology and society taking over the beautiful world of nature. This outcome consists of two images seamlessly blended to create one. The image of the phone is B&W to reinforced the meaning of deforestation. The B&W aspect of this image is what Is lost to this future road being built through a beautiful redwood forest. Where the phone is making this visible, as if it can see the future. I made the image of the road depict very faint saturations to emphasise that a road isn’t a beau- tiful and colourful as nature. The relevance of this outcome is that it seamlessly emerges two images into one, looking quite realistic as well as creating a story.
Emergent 03 - “Split Season”

The purpose behind this image ‘Split Seasons’ was to create a fictional visual where two worlds are co-existing together in one place, however they both consist of very different climates and is not technically possible. The meaning behind this image is kind of metaphorical, as two places on two op- posing ends of the earth consisting of different climate how- ever do share the same sun and the same sky’s. Even though they can’t be together they do share this common similarity. This what I tried to depict above by them both physically sharing the same sky and sun. The relevance of this outcome is that it seamlessly emerges two images into one to depict a metaphorical meaning that we all share the same sun no matter where we are.
MAKE BELIEVE
Make Believe 01 - “Wave Pool”

This concept of make believe is play on the idea of a wave pool, creating a miniature model of a wave pool housed within a bath. Playing on the idea that the closest thing I can to be right now is a bath because of lock down, where I’m sure most people would much prefer to be enjoying the outdoors like the beach. This image relates back to the brief as it emerges two images together to create something that looks believable, which was the aim of the make believe brief. Where it is not physically possible to see a beach within a bath tub with people surfing waves. I thought this was a pretty interesting outcome and actually looks quite cool.
Make Believe 02 - “Door to Paradise”

This make believe concept was kind of playing around with the concept of isolation and lock down. Being trapped inside but being hopeful that the next door 2020 opens for us is more beautiful and surreal then the life covid-19 has provided for us this year. This relates back to the brief as it emerges two images to make something like a bathroom and a stunning photo of mountains blend together to look realistic. The mountains have been cut off, making me as the view wanting to lean forward and push it open. It plays on the concept that there is a light at the end of this covid tunnel and that a life full of beauty and that we all have to keep pushing forward.awaits.
Make Believe 03 - “Coffee O’Clock”

The concept behind this make believe image ‘Coffee O’clock’ was to create a comical aspect that people always look at the watches or clocks to see if it is break time or isn’t too late to have a coffee. This is why I made the clock- face coffee to play on the idea of people checking to see if it is coffee time. This relates back to the brief as it emerg- es two images to make something like a watch and cof- fee seamlessly blend to look believable, “can something impossible be made believable, yes it does. This worked because the perfect circular shape housed the mug of coffee perfectly, similar to the third emergent image Defor- estation.
