YFI Removal Efforts at Crab Lake

William Mahler recently concluded a more than 34-year tenure with Baird in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as chairman of equity capital markets and equity asset management. William Mahler now focuses on his roles with various community and philanthropic organizations, such as his position as president of the Crab Lake Conservation Foundation.

Located in Presque Isle, the Crab Lake Conservation Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) organization committed to the preservation and protection of the Crab Lake ecosystem and the surrounding environment.

One of the organization’s latest initiatives involves the complete removal of the yellow flag iris (YFI) from Crab Lake and all adjacent areas. The infestation of yellow iris gained attention in 2017, and in 2019 a concentrated campaign against the invasive plant species began.

The foundation’s research indicates that approximately five of Crab Lake’s 14 miles of shoreline have been impacted by YFI, with nearly 3,000 individual plants identified at 112 locations. As efforts to remove YFI escalated in 2020, about 75 percent of known YFI locations were treated in some way, including 58 percent of the plants being physically removed.

Without the actions of the Crab Lake Conservation Foundation, unchecked YFI development would further encroach on territory inhabited by native plant life, draining valuable resources and overrunning the environment. The plant also has the potential to disturb loon nesting sites and, perhaps far more damaging, to infest the adjacent outlet creek and disturb the natural flow of water from Crab Lake.

More information about the negative impact of yellow iris on the lake and specific abatement methods can be found online at www.crablakeconservationfoundation.org.
