Luminous colors, soft, gestural movements, structures and grains are characteristic of the latest works by Florian Herzog. Although they were created as abstract compositions, they are reminiscent of landscapes, stained glass windows, and generally figurative elements. In monumental large or medium format, as luminous window films or hung in series, Herzog's latest photographs get to the bottom of the process of photography.
In recent months, the artist, who lives in Vienna, has returned to the process of image production through his artistic explorations. The abstract photographs are all created in his studio. In series of photos he examined the physical principles of photography such as subtractive color mixing or speed. It is by no means a question of the products of a moment, but of questioning the momentary. The photographer conjures up the abstract compositions with the help of colored light on the film and slips into a double role: he acts as the photographer and as the painter. It is his body, his gestures, his movements that are captured on slide film. In creating these photographic images, there is seldom just one. Moods and physicality are depicted in serial photographs. Despite all preparation and conceptual penetration of his actions the principle of chance remains always preserved.
