SENSE OF PLACE - HAKUBA LOGO & ANIMATION DESIGN

For this project sense of place, I had to create a logo and animation that symbolises a place in that world that means something to me and incorporated the use of negative space, I chose Hakuba, Japan. Hakuba is a village in the Nagano region of Japan and home to some of the best ski mountains in the world. It is located 44km west of Nagano City (about an hour drive) and about 270km northwest of Tokyo. The town is internationally recognised for it’s marvelous ski resorts in the northern Japan Alps, housing 10 ski resorts with more than 200 runs and was also the home of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Hakuba is blessed with plenty of snow, with an average of 11-13 meters of powder per season, offering lots of powder everyday and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the famous “Japow”.

I chose to do the Hakuba Valley because I went there in February/march this year for a music festival called Snow Machine and skiing here was one of the best experiences of my life. I have always wanted to go to Japan my whole life and finally going was a big achievement for me, I made so many priceless memories here and I couldn’t thing of a better place to make a combination mark of then a place that meant so much to me.

The intent of this combination mark is to bring together the marvellous mountains and ski culture of the Hakuba Valley, through the aspects of the summit, snow and the Japanese flag
