That's a Wrap – Christmas card

STV Studios briefed me to create a festive Christmas card concept that avoided drawing too much on the traditional themes of togetherness. Given in 2020 most people couldn't visit their families it felt inappropriate.
Christmas is a tactile season and I wanted to recreate the sensory experience we're all familiar with – even though the final card would be digital. My inspiration was beautifully wrapped gifts tied with shiny twirled ribbon. Given its use in the tv and film industry, "That's a Wrap" seemed a fitting message to signal the end of the year and nod to the festive season.
I drew out the ribbon type by hand first, since ribbon is very fluid it was easier to start on paper. I drew each letter several times to explore different shapes and decide what looked the most realistic. I continued to develop and refine it in Illustrator and Photoshop. I used real ribbon from my Christmas box as reference for the shapes and shiny satin effect.
