FAA’s NextGen Program Aims to Modernize Aerospace

A special operations professional with the United States Department of Defense for more than 25 years, Leroy Stotelmyer focuses primarily on commercial operations for technology transfers, including emerging markets and countries. Formerly a test and certification pilot with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Leroy Stotelmyer continues to serve as a safety consultant and advisor with the agency.

Committed to maintaining the world’s safest and most efficient aerospace system, the FAA operates the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). An initiative aimed at modernizing the aerospace industry in myriad ways, NextGen focuses on integrating new technologies such as digital communication systems and satellite navigation, and upgrading infrastructure to improve safety, speed, and efficiency. Improved surveillance technology also provides air traffic controllers with precise locations of aircraft and offers a clearer picture of weather patterns.

In addition to reducing delays and improving the travel experience, NextGen will reduce environmental impact by conducting research into alternative jet fuels and engine technology that produces fewer carbon emissions.
