Pictograms. Palast der Republik (Berlin), GDR
The Palace of the Republic was a public building designed by the East German government in the 1970s as a cultural centre and as headquarters for the national parliament. It was demolished in the 2000s after plans for the reconstruction of the Royal Palace of Berlin passed in the German parliament.
These pictograms were used around the building as means of wayfinding. They were mounted on metal brackets and made of a traslucent plastic. They were backlit and they lighted up to indicate additional information, such as the level of occupancy of each area. They were sometimes accompanied by clocks in the same style.
