Women and Media Collective

About the client - The Women and Media Collective was formed in 1984 by a group of Sri Lankan feminists interested in exploring ideological and practical issues of concern to women in Sri Lanka. Their work has contributed to social and political change, the inclusion of women and gender concerns in the peace process, increased state recognition of women’s rights, the enactment of new legislation or legislative and policy reform promoting and protecting women’s rights, and recognition for the need to increase women’s representation in politics.

Project brief -
The Women and Media Collective conducted a storytelling workshop for activists to use storytelling as a tool for raising awareness and shifting advocacy online.
Participants submitted storytelling pieces accompanied by a write up or voice note describing the piece and what it means to them.

-5 illustrations to accompany the respective written piece or transcript of each story.
-Single page per piece (to fit whole page either landscape or portrait)
Interpretations could be a few panels of a comic, one big illustration or an abstract interpretation.
Timeline - 01 month
Submission 01 - Accompanying art piece for the poem 'Liberating Love' by one of the workshop participants, about women embracing and enjoying their sexuality and pleasure. No nudity due to the sexual nature of this submission to avoid any issues with print/publication, but enough visuals for the viewer to know exactly what's going on without censoring her sexuality and pleasure
Trigger warning - rape
Submission 02 -  Accompanying piece for ' My friend wrote a poem about me ', a piece about sexual assault by a close friend, the reported statistics of rape cases among the many that go unheard and parents more concerned with their reputation over the safety and wellbeing of the child.
Trigger warning - rape
Submission 03 - Sequential art piece to illustrate a text conversation between two survivors discussing their experiences of sharing and having to censor their stories in society. The dialogue is direct quotation from their conversation.

Submission 04 - Accompanying piece for 'Tale of a Spinster', a poem by a woman who was never able to "afford" a husband due to the still existing dowry system. She had an interesting perspective of shopping for grooms in a market place setting which I really wanted to play with.

Trigger warning - assault and self harm
Submission 05 - Accompanying piece for ' I wonder if I'll kill myself ', a write up about dealing with assault, numbing the pain and wanting to love yourself but struggling to.
