Tips on Fly Fishing for Bluegill

With a bachelor's degree in economics from Williams College, Nathaniel Whittle works as a delivery driver for Parsello in Austin, Texas, while studying for his actuarial exams. Outside of work, Nathaniel Whittle spends time on several outdoor activities such as camping, biking, and fly fishing. One popular type of catch when fly fishing is the bluegill, which is plentiful in most freshwater environments.

Bluegills are panfish of the sunfish family that range from four to twelve inches, with a distinct blue plate next to their gills. Since bluegill is a popular fish when stocking lakes and rivers, it can be easily found in most freshwater environments across the United States.

They are also particularly good beginner fish to aim for when fly fishing since they will bite on various fly sizes and feed throughout the day. Often seen even during winter, bluegill can be caught with dry flies such as small nymph, poppers, and foam bugs. Some late fall fly choices include midge larva, mini jig, and San Juan worm.
