Woman, Not Object

I created this drawing on Adobe Fresco for the Keith Haring Contest. I title this "Woman, Not Object" because the image depicts a woman examining her body from afar through the mirror. I tinted the parts of her body that are often sexualized in a woman in the media and society with a pinkish shade. Pink is historically a "female" color, so to recapture ownership of that stereotype and reinforce the pain of female objectification, it is the color I selected for highlights. The black surrounding her is meant to close in the composition, making the figure become the focal point, and also give the viewer a sense of momentary claustrophobia and tightness. This brief feeling directly relates the feeling that women have every day to the audience.

This drawing promotes positive change in that it addresses the issue of the sexualization of women today. By addressing this problem, I hope that we can dismantle the stereotypes of women and the constant objectification of female bodies.
