Documenting Time
New Leaf/ New Life/ New Leaf
DVB102 #oneperday2020
The first weekly task of DVB102 was to document an object of our choice and its changes over time. I chose to document one of the new leaves on a pothos plant in my home, from its tightly enclosed form to a wide open waxy leaf. I observed the leaf across ten or so days as not much changed over the first five, i decided to extend the timeline of the first project. I don't often do pencil drawings so i found this week fairly challenging. The techniques i chose were mostly hatching and cross hatching as well as smudging with my finger.

Tools - 100GSM paper , 2B & 4B pencils.

Process - The entire pothos plant in this drawing in actuality is enormous, with hundred of leaves. For this project i chose to just draw one of the new shoots rather than the whole thing. I began at the node where this shoot begins, drawing the outline and shading the darker, dry pieces of the leaves that remain along the stems. The developing roots along the stems were also darker. The developing leaf was very compact and unfurled at this stage. It was brighter, lighter and waxier than the other leaves so i did not shade it as much. I chose to hatch the leaves and smudge with my finger to depict the veins of the leaves.

Reflection - I am not particularly skilled in pencil, still life drawing, it is a skill that i am still working on improving. However i feel this image depicts the plant pretty well. It was enjoyable to draw but i did find it difficult to keep the drawings consistent.

Process - The process of this image was more or less the same as the first. I sketched out the outline and went through shading and smudging the roots, dried patches and veins on the leaves. The new leaf was slightly more open in this day and very bright and waxy.

Reflection - I feel that i could have used different shading to show the colour contrast between the old leaves and the new leaf. The new leaf is very green and waxy, which i attempted to show by leaving it mostly blank, with no shading, but perhaps more shading overall would have shown this better.

Process- Again, i outlined the shape of the off shoot and shaded in the different textures of the plant. As the new leaf opened it was much brighter and had many more prominent veins than the other older leaves. I attempted to show this through clearer hatching.

Reflection- I think i showed the differences in the new leaf more clearly in this image. The veins are very apparent and it looks different than the other leaves however i still think shading the whole plant darker would improve these images quite a lot.

Process- In this image i attempted to shade the leaves more deeply and smudged the leaves more with my finger.

Reflection- Although i thought more shading would improve the image i wasn't so sure of my technique or skill. Although they aren't terrible i just wasn't too confident with image 4.

Process- Like the previous drawings, i outlined the shape of the leaves and hatched the different textures along the stem, the dried parts and the root nodes. I attempted to shade the leaves more in this image compared to the earlier ones to show the waxy leaves more effectively. I also attempted to smudge the leaves more with my finger.

Reflection- This is my least favourite of the drawings. Although it is very similar, i feel the extra shading and smudging makes it look messier and less accurate to the actual plant.
