Kids Wireless Headphone

Design Brief

Create packaging for new wireless headphones for kids. The product will be sold primarily in big box stores, especially in the Canadian marketplace. Target users are children of elementary or earlier age, but primary buyers will be their parents or other adults shopping for young children.

All features and copy must be bilingual, but still easily and quickly readable. Key features about this product; noise limiting and kid-sized. The headphone will also come with stickers for kids to decorate their headphone.

Must fit the Wicked Audio brand, which is edgy, young, and colorful. Still needs to stay clean to fit in to competitive traditional tech packaging. Must be edgy, but still appealing to children and their parents.

Solution

A busy, bright, and rainbow-colored artwork was created first to develop the “voice” of the product. This background artwork would give the packaging character and also contain most of the sticker elements. Neutral elements, like rainbows, trees, and clouds combined with more “edgy” elements like aliens, skateboarders, boombox monsters, and toads gives the background the right balance of “wicked” flair and still appropriate for a wide target audience. Many of the elements are repeated in the included sticker sheet which helps continue the user’s experience of the brand.

To fit with the clean tech style that most wireless audio sections in retail have, most of the elements of the package are on plain white fields. Small borders allow the rainbow background to peek through. The product is large and on a clean non-busy background. Key features are easy to read. Hierarchy starts with the large product image then the most important feature “Kid Safe Headphone; rated at 85dB,” these are the elements to draw the consumer in. Then the brand’s logo, Bluetooth logo, and product name are next, followed by the many other features important to this product.

Large detailed images of the product are found throughout the packaging. Clean typography, and hints of color keep the overall theme of being bright and active, yet still clean and clear.
