Hic Sunt Dracones was the final project in my Communication: Time, Motion, Media class at OCAD, taught by Greg Van Alstyne. We were asked to combine all the many techniques (both conceptual and practical) we’d learned throughout the semester and create a short film.

Due to a mutual fascination with the myth and mystery of the Giant Squid (Architeuthis dux), occasionally a.k.a. The Kraken, this short film takes the form of a mockumentary narrated by one Admiral Josephine Barr-Crake, former master of the seas and Giant Squid educator.

Working with two other students (Martha Ropego & Brian Pierce), we dabbled in traditional stop motion animation and blended it with infographic-like 2D animation created (by me) with a combination of Illustrator and After Effects.

Below are detail shots of the puppets I made using a combination of techniques including sewing, embroidery, painting, wire frame construction & etc.
