novum 08/09.20 »men & women«

A topic on which almost everything has already been said, but nevertheless it became the content of our first double edition: men and women. In our novum+ »men & women« we did not want to perpetuate certain clichés, but instead grant you exciting insights into design projects that depict anything but stereotypes. We talked to renowned designers as well as young talents and present projects that deal with various target groups, self-acceptance, gender, bodyparts and diversity.
On top of that, this magazine is a real novum. We produced our first turn-around issue with a colour cut that can be read from two sides. Great reading for those summer days …

The cover

»You can’t have your cake and eat it too« is a common saying, but with this issue this is exactly what we are doing. When you topic is »men & women« you need to decide whom you want to put on the cover – a man or a woman? We chose a Solomonic way and simply produced a turn-around issue with two covers. Both motives are part of the project »Same, Same, But Different« by Max Siedentopf. On the men’s side you’ll find a photo by Peggy Kuiper, the women’s motive was shot by Jo Duck.

Whichever way you hold this issue of novum, you get a different effect. On the edges we have simulated a colour cut in offset printing. Of course the result is not as sharp as with a real colour cut, but it’s very easy and cost-effective to produce. Our printer f&w Medien supported us with the necessary knowhow. »The medium is the message« – we agree 100% with Marshall McLuhan. The women’s section is marked with a quote from the US-American suffragist and women’s rights activist, Alice Paul: »There is nothing complicated about equality«. And the section on men bears the words of the Turkish dramatist and writer Mehmet Murat İldan: »Define yourself or others will define you«.

And of course, novum wouldn’t be novum without an inspiring paper on the cover. The metallic-iridescent Majestic Chameleon adds just the right amount of glamour to this issue. This wonderful paper by Inapa simply puts the icing on printed matter.

All this and more awaits in this issue of novum!
