For as long as we’ve had the means, we’ve been studying and recording images of other people. The earliest known “portrait” is 27,000 years old, scrawled inside a cave in France. Yes, the faded black strokes are a far cry from the detailed sculptures, paintings, and photographs to come, but is early evidence of the natural instinct to watch and record those around us.

You’d think that after thousands of years, we’d have exhausted the many techniques and innovations in portraiture. Although there are some techniques we’re more used to seeing than others, Behance creatives continue to step up and demonstrate innovative ways to consider and represent their fellow humans. Remember the days of term papers and Times New Roman? If you’re a person who appreciates design, it’s tough to be boxed in with a handful of “authorized” fonts.

The creatives at Behance, though, demonstrate that there’s no reason why typography can’t be an art filled with as much innovation and personality as is found in more abstract creative fields. That typography doesn’t have to exist only on paper, and sometimes isn’t even recognizable as letters at first glance. Once a month at the Behance Team's "State of the Union" meeting, we invite one of our own to teach us a little lesson on an area of expertise. In recent months we've been schooled on Helvetica vs. Arial, Twitter visualizations, and select Photoshop features. Last month, Alex Krug taught us all an important life skill- how to tie a bowtie. Although the success rate was not extremely high, the men of Behance are well on their way to learning. We also discovered that, in the absence of a mirror, an iPad works as a great substitute!

It has been about one week since the publication of Making Ideas Happen by Behance founder/ceo Scott Belsky. The book became an immediate bestseller upon launch, debuting at #15 on Amazon and leading every business and creative category. The book was also included in the Wall Street Journal as a national bestseller in business. Design and business blogs around the web have since had a chance to read the book and weigh in with reviews.

As you may have noticed, the new version of the Behance Network includes a "follow" feature and a newly imposed limit of 1000 members for your Inner Circle.

Over the past year, we have received feedback from thousands of Behance Network members. During the process, we received a number of consistent complaints about the "Inner Circle":

• Members were frequently messaging their entire Inner Circle, creating what most users consider to be "spam."
• The purpose of the Inner Circle was confusing, especially for new  members.
• Some users were using their Inner Circle to assemble conversations rather than creating a "Group."

 

Our Solution
Given that most users were adding people to their Inner Circle to "follow their work," we created the new "Follow" feature and brought it to the forefront.
