Lincoln Mayne: Restraint, Pressure, & Creative Impact

Lincoln Mayne's fashion line is described as a "fusion of unbranded organic quality combined with inimitable style." He's a creative genius grounded by disciplined design, professionalism, and cross-pollination.

Lincoln has partnered with Bumble & Bumble, VH1, Sony, Onward Kashiyama, and others. "I do a lot of cross-branding now with companies I respect. When you work with large companies, the big things they are focused on are budgets and timelines. These are obviously not key focus areas for creatives, but they're important. For every idea, you need to identify the sheer mathematics of how to get something done"

Lincoln cites his collaborations with large companies as beneficial to both his artistic edge and his ability to execute. "I have been collaborating with companies for almost ten years, starting with the BBC in London...I've learned that you need to understand the company's needs, it is pointless to collaborate otherwise...The other thing: I never miss a deadline and I always stay on budget."

Lincoln sees budgets and timelines as tools rather than hindrances.
"A lot of design is about limiting possibilities. While I am still using my own aesthetic value, I adopt the deadlines and budgets as tools for my creative process, rather than restraints...they help me limit possibilities and design MORE effectively... You need to be comfortable with pressure and able to make pressure a positive aspect of the design"

"Cross-pollination is huge for me." Lincoln was formally trained as a sculptor in Perth, Australia. He has worked as an installation artist for the BBC, a designer for the London Toy Modeling Museum, a developer of interactive films for Madame Tussauds, and he taught himself how to sew and print. It seems that experience in many mediums pushes innovation in any one medium. Lincoln's impact in fashion is a result of the "aesthetic values" he has taken every opportunity to develop throughout his life. It is likely that Lincoln's past experiences unrelated to fashion were some of his most valuable.

I've enjoyed his work for years. Undoredo is right, LM is a one stop shop - always thinking of every aspect of his product. I recently picked up several pieces from him, and the quality is tremendous. I always get compliments when I wear it out. And don't even get me started on his beautiful paintings and printwork. Good one on ya, Mayne!

I've been buying his clothes in NY since he started. He's the kind of creative that goes from designing the business plan to figureing out the color for the stiches on the lable.

Lincoln suggests "You need to be comfortable with pressure and able to make pressure a positive aspect of the design." I couldn't agree more. I just wonder how long it takes to feel like you're not compromising great design when you work under pressure?
