Soul Seat Drawings for Ikaria Design Co.
Nathan Halwel

Ikaria Design Co. is a great group of people I have had the opportunity to work with over the past five years, developing imagery for their furniture company ranging from logos, package design, and promotional material.  This commission was an exciting departure from digital needs to explore and celebrate the unique forms of their flagship product called the Soul Seat - a bi-level stool that allows the sitter to maintain movement and activity, pivoting their hips on the upper stool while shifting their weight and leg positions underneath on the larger base platform.  The design is an incredibly satisfying  balance of organic and rigid forms.  As a functional object that looks nothing like the common task chair, I felt it was important to highlight the mechanical construction of the product, and how it's beauty lies in the the unique opportunities it provides to the user, and by proxy, to me as the artist tasked with capturing the chair's value and beauty.

The following drawings are ballpoint pen on printmaking paper, mounted to 20"x20" cradled panels.
